DEXA stands for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. It is a quick, painless test that measures the density of your bones — denser bones are stronger and less prone to fracture — and it is the standard method for diagnosing osteoporosis.
Also called: DEXA scan · DXA · Bone density test · Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry
Who should get a DEXA scan?
Physicians typically recommend DEXA screening for patients with any of the following.
- Recent fractures from a minor fall
- Height loss from vertebral fractures
- Extended steroid medication use of three months or more
- Early menopause or prolonged amenorrhea
- Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or celiac disease
- Family history of hip fracture
- Low body mass index (under 19)
Why does early detection matter?
Detecting low bone density early lets your physician offer targeted advice and treatment to strengthen bone and reduce fracture risk — before a fracture happens rather than after.
How do I prepare?
No calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan. Wear comfortable clothing without metal at the waist or hips.
Where can I get this exam?
