Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an advanced MRI technique that maps the brain's white matter. By measuring how water molecules diffuse within neural tissue, DTI reveals the organization and integrity of white matter tracts — the wiring that connects regions of the brain.
Also called: DTI · Diffusion tensor imaging · Tractography
What are white matter tracts?
White matter consists of bundled nerve fibers that transmit signals throughout the brain. DTI evaluates their structural integrity and the connectivity patterns between different brain regions — information conventional MRI sequences cannot provide.
What is DTI used for?
DTI is particularly valuable for conditions that affect white matter.
- Traumatic brain injury and post-concussion assessment
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Neurodegenerative disease
- Pre-surgical brain mapping support
Why does it matter clinically?
DTI lets clinicians see how a neurological condition has affected brain connectivity and communication between regions — including subtle white matter damage that conventional MRI might miss. That supports both diagnosis and treatment planning.
How do I prepare?
Standard MRI preparation — we provide scrubs for every patient, no jewelry, and implant screening.
Where can I get this exam?
Diffusion Tensor Imaging is available at seven of our centers — Palm Harbor MRI, Palm Harbor MRI – Wesley Chapel, Highland MRI, Brandon MRI, Bradenton MRI, Venice MRI and Venice MRI – Port Charlotte. One call reaches every location — we will schedule you at whichever has the soonest opening, usually the same week.
